Phase 1- Full Liquid 1 Diet

Posted by Unknown at 11:55 AM 0 comments
This is my Bariatric Solutions Phase 1- Full Liquid 1 Diet:

Liquids Allowed:
  • Water
  • Sugar Free Flavored Water (Propel, Fruit 20)
  • Decaffeinated/Unsweetened Tea
  • Decaffeinated Coffee
  • Crystal Light
  • Minute Maid Light
  • Tropicana Sugar Free Drink
  • Sugar Free Kook-Aid
  • Sugar Free Jell-o
  • Sugar Free Popsicles (<20 calories)
  • Clear Bouillon or broth
  • Milk: Fat Free, Skim, 1%, Lactaid or plain Soy Milk
  1. Drink 4 ounces of liquids every hour your awake (1 ounce every 15 minutes)
  2. Measure all of your liquids (1 oz = 1/8 cup, 30 mil or a coffee scoop)
  3. Rinse your mouth with Listerine (astringent mouthwash) 2-3 times daily for 2 weeks
  4. Sip slowly. Do not use straws, sports bottle with a sports cap or sippy cups.
  5. Your total fluid intake should be 48-64 oz. daily to avoid dehydration. If not able to consume at least 48 oz. of fluid for more than 2 days call the office to be evaluated for dehydration.
  6. Limit coffee and tea to no more than 2 cups daily.
  7. 1 cup milk = 8g protein, limit milk to no more than 2 cups daily.
  8. Avoid carbonated beverages - even sodas
  9. Avoid Gatorade, Powerade, Fruit Juice and any other sugary beverages.
  10. Avoid gum
  11. Supplement with 80-90 grams of protein daily. Women should supplement with 80 grams of protein. Men should supplement with close to 90 grams of protein. Protein supplements are necessary to avoid medical and nutritional problems. Protein supplements count toward your fluid intake.
That'll be a week of that. I'm thinking that I'll do okay with it although I'm sure I'll be tired of liquids so it may be harder than what I'm thinking.

I'll also have to monitor my heart rate because an elevated heart rate is a sign of dehydration. If it's over 110 bpm with palpitations then I need to call the office to be evaluated for dehydration.

I honestly don't understand how people can say this is the easy way out. It's going to be pretty darn hard for a while.

Optifast Day 21, April 22 2015

Posted by Unknown at 11:30 AM 0 comments
I'm not going to go over day 20 because it's been the same as the other days.

I got my results for the H. Pylori and thankfully it's negative but now I wonder where the gastritis and polyps are coming from. I don't know how long it'll take to get the results for that but I'm anxious to know it.

April 21'st was my second nutrition class and it was a lot of information to take in. It was about the day before surgery and the day after. I also got weighed and I'm on track for next weeks weigh-in!! That was pretty awesome.

Okay here's some information about what my bariatric program requires for surgery:

I'm keeping a food diary now but I'll continue to keep one after the surgery and bring it with me to all post-op appointments

Week 1: Full Liquid 1 Diet
Week 2-3: Full Liquid 2 Diet
Week 4: Pureed Diet
Week 5-6: Solid Food 1 Diet (soft solid food)
Week 7: Solid Food 2 Diet (regular solid food)

Wow! 7 weeks until I can have regular food! That seems like a long time. The dietitian said that I'll be craving salads so get them in now. Honestly, I think there will be other things that I'll be craving.

The day before surgery is:

  • No Food and stop taking Optifast or any protein supplements
  • Follow a clear liquid diet only
  • Drink at least 100 ounces of fluids but it's things that I can drink now so I don't think it'll be that bad regarding what I can drink.
  • Exercise Goal: At least 30-45 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity to prepare you for minimal exercise to come in the next few days.
The 100 ounces of fluid is going to be a bit hard, but I told my mother that I'll probably have a hard time sleeping so it won't matter if I'm up and down going to the restroom through the night.

I'm now able to walk 45 minutes but I can't do it moderate to vigorously because of my asthma. They'll just have to accept that. I think it's awesome that I can walk 45 minutes now!

Ingredients
  1. 3 cups gluten free oat flour (rolled oats ground into a flour)
  2. 2 standard scoops vanilla protein powder (can sub for an extra 1/2 cup oat flour)
  3. 2 T granulated sweetener of choice (Optional)
  4. 1/2 tsp sea salt
  5. 1/2 cup + 2 T nut butter of choice (I used peanut butter)
  6. 3/4 cup brown rice syrup (can sub for honey if not strict vegan)
  7. 1/4-1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk*
  8. White chocolate chunks (make homemade version listed earlier if strictly vegan)
  9. Dried Raspberries and cranberries
Instructions
  1. Line a large baking tray with baking paper and set aside.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the oat flour, vanilla protein powder, sweetener of choice and sea salt and mix well.
  3. In a microwave safe bowl, add the nut butter of choice and brown rice syrup and heat until melted and mix to incorporate.
  4. Add the liquid mixture to the dry mixture and stir until fully combined- Mixture should be crumbly. Slowly add almond milk, one tablespoon at a time, until a very thick dough is formed. Stir through the white chocolate chunks, dried raspberries and cranberries until fully incorporated.
  5. Using your hands, form small balls and press down to a cookie shape on the baking tray. Using a fork, press down on it twice and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before consuming.
Notes
  1. Depending on the protein powder and/or if you use all oat flour, you need to adjust your liquid mixture.
  2. These can be stored at room temperature. If refrigerated, thaw very slightly.
  3. The granulated sweetener of choice is optional- For a sweetener cookie, add 1-2 tablespoons. I prefer a more 'bland' cookie dough to bring out the flavours from the raspberries, cranberries and white chocolate chunks.

Optifast 8 & 9, April 18 &19

Once again I'm doing two days together. Everything is still going good with the Optifast diet. I did have a weak moment on Saturday and ate a cookie. Back on track though and hopefully the scale will show it on Tuesday when I have my next nutrition class. I'll be having my pre-surgery group on Thursday and have to be there at 7:30 in the morning! Not looking forward to that.

Today marks 24 days until surgery! It really is passing so fast. I bought some of the vitamins at Walgreens that I'll be taking after my bariatric surgery because they were buy 1/get 1 and buy 1/get 1 50%. I got a multivitamin, calcium citrate and vitamin B12.  I still need vitamin C and maybe iron. Awesome deal! Spent $50 but that will get me through 2 months and hopefully Walgreens will have the same sale during that time.

Optifast Day 7 April 17 2015

Today was EGD day. I was really excited to get it done because that's the last of my tests to get done. I might have to get some blood work, but I'm not sure.

I didn't have to be at the hospital until 1:30.  I thought I would be so hungry since I couldn't eat anything after 12:00 midnight but I didn't feel any hunger.

I had to wait about an hour to get back to the procedure room but the room that I was waiting in had a TV which made the wait time pass much faster. They started an IV and then it was just the waiting game. In about an hour they came to take me back to the room. When I got there I was so surprised I didn't have to get onto an uncomfortable table. They kept me in the stretcher that I was on in the waiting room. I was even able to keep my warm blanket that I brought with me. Then they put me on oxygen and put this horrible plastic thing in my mouth and told me to bite down on it. Because I have dentures it was against my gums and it really hurt. They then put an oxygen mask on me and started the IV sedation. That stuff really burned! I wanted to tell them but I was quickly getting knocked out and didn't have time. I don't think they would have care :)  I did tell the nurse when I got back to recovery though! The procedure didn't take long at all and I didn't have to stay in recovery very long.

Now, onto the results. I have moderately severe gastritis and 2 polyps on my stomach. They took biopsies of the polyps and the stomach lining. I don't think it's anything to worry about regarding the polyps and the gastritis is probably h-pylori which all I'll have to do is take an antibiotic for it. Hopefully I'll know something next week.

I got home and slept a lot! My stomach hurt some from the biopsies and my throat hurt from what they put down my throat. All in all, it's a pretty simple procedure and really not anything to worry about.

Optifast Day 6 April 16 2015

Today I tried something different for my protein, veggie, fruit and oil meal. I had grapes and greek yogurt with sugar free jello crystals for my protein and fruit which tasted so decadent! The yogurt was peach and the jello was strawberry and it was so yummy! Then I had broccoli with butter for my veggie and oil.

I've tried the strawberry shake and the chicken soup and love the strawberry but really don't care for the chicken soup. I'll finish up the box but from now on I'll stick with the tomato.

Today was really a do nothing day which was rather nice since my week has been packed with stuff to do.

Tomorrow is my EGD and I'm hoping everything turns out okay.
